In honor of Native American Heritage month, we'll be focusing all 3 of our November Couch Convos meetings on the UC Davis Land Acknowledgement and the Patwin people, who's land UC Davis is on. Although we can only scratch the surface in 3 meetings, our goal is to learn more about the history and perspective of Native peoples, and current issues faced by indigenous people in the US. Special thanks to Sam Hilborn for helping plan these meetings!

The first of these meetings will be held on Monday, 11/2 starting at 5:45 PM. We'll start off with 15 minutes to chit chat, and will begin the formal meeting at 6 PM. For this meeting, we'll be doing a screening of the film Gather (<-- see the trailer by clicking on this link) to learn more about the challenges and initiatives around Native Americans' food sovereignty. The film is 1 hour 14 minutes, so we will plan on discussing the film at one of the other November Couch Convs.

The Gather screening will be hosted through storyspaces. You can register for the event here: https://story-spaces.com/events/gather-screening-with-couch-convos-lrxdi4. Tickets are free; registering is how you get the access link to watch the film, so please make sure you do that!

The screening starts at 6 pm Pacific on Monday, 11/2! If you want to log in ahead of time, it looks like we can use the chat function of the platform to catch up with each other ahead of the screening! I'll be there around 5:45, and others are welcome to join for chit-chat beforehand!

We won't discuss the film at this Couch Convos meeting- we'll just be watching! Please be sure to make a mental (or physical) note of things from the film that you'd like to discuss in small group discussions at a later CC meeting!

Couch Convos are biweekly Zoom meetings designed to provide a space for students to discuss and build understanding of issues around systemic racism, anti-racism, and social justice, as well as to develop and execute actionable items that bring about positive change.
